I've missed some of the visual CAPTCHA because the characters were so
twisted and obscured with random 'noise' or lines that even with normal
vision it was impossible to tell 0 from O or even Q or 5 from S.

Not only have I seen some so distorted that I was guessing at the underlying string, I've seen others that could have been included in the more difficult levels of a Falant test (used to determine degrees of color-blindness). Even the ones I had to take at regular flight physicals while in the Navy couldn't hold a candle to some of the color combinations these things come up with.
Yeah, there's gotta be a better way.
