I did stumble upon a Javascript that read query
strings in URLs with no back-end processing, but I
don't have access to my work machine at the moment.

If I can dig it out then in theory you could pass
query strings (like newpage.html?prevpage=index) and
then read it off so you can trace where the user was
previously, but it could get a bit messy and
complicated.

Alternatively, could you try reading the History
object in JS and work it out from there?
