You 150% sure you've got your Windows Volume control turned all the way up? You want your Wave output set to maximum. It's likely you're getting your CDs playing fine because you've got your CD-ROM linked to your sound card direct via a cable (don't need them any more because Windows XP reads CDs digitally now and send the info through software).
Yes, I've checked those and also even though I reformatted and that should have reinstalled the drivers I did just now reinstall the drivers just in case and I've still got the same problem. This is so weird. How can I have sound "sort of" is all I keep thinking! I would think either I have sound or I don't but apparently not!
