Ah, sorry. I had it in my head that you were talking javascript, due to the subject line and the fact that IE doesn't support :hover for arbitrary elements. Should have read the question more attentively; the reference to CSS rollovers was just above the section I quoted. Doh!

Yes, and your problem is... ? If you change the z-index in the
onMouseOver
event, and do nothing in the onMouseOut event, the z-index maintains its
value. It does not revert to a previous value simply  because you
have moved
the mouse. It is a property of that element and will retain its
value unless
it is explicitly changed.
