I'd go with this too & say this is definitely the time to cosy up to a local hardware enthusiast/repair shop - it may cost your friend a few dollars, but just look at what it is costing you personally in lost work time trying to support her through this. A hardware guy will have the right diagnostic tools to sort out what's up... ie is the pc merely having the digital equiv of a hissy fit because it didn't like the air quality in it's new town, or does every chip in it need shoving back in it's socket due to the removal company's carelessness with it.

Don't be sucked into feeling you *have* to solve the problem - you've run thru several suggestions which haven't worked, the time has probably come to sweetly say, "I'm sorry, I've given you all the standard Quick Solutions, now you really need a hardware specialist" & pass her the yellow pages, with a couple of known reliables highlighted. If you don't know one personally, the head of IT at your local community college is probably a good person to ask for a recommendation, as their machines will get hard usage...

So basically the computer was jostled about in a move and hasn't worked
since. Sounds to me like hardware though she could try booting from her
original os cd and seeing if that works. Otherwise its either into the
repair shop or replacement time. If it is running ME then I'd replace it but
my tolerance with old hardware is pretty limited.

My friend moved to Cleveland from Columbus almost a year ago and said that
the computer was working fine before the move but hasn't moved since they
got here. I think that they took a while before they set it up so I don't
know where to go from here. Her father said to replace the battery but from
what I have researched online, it doesn't seem like the solution.
