Thank you for your reply Peter.
I know it is going to be a big job. I plan to really research this
before I even tell them that I can do it. I am living in the U.S. now
but my mom is in South Africa. I don't know if that makes any
difference. Insurance is very different in South Africa.
Hmm. I will keep you posted on what transpires.

Personally I would have thought it was too technical (as far as
industry specialities go) to start and there must be something out
there already. These industry specific packages can be horrendous -
and who takes the blame (and cost!) if it doesn't work right?
I was involved in producing a Manufacturing Management Package about
25 years ago - we hired some programmers who reckoned they could do it
- but then they discovered that the complexities of what was required
was beyond them! It sounds simple until you start coding and looking
at all the possible variations! In this case think of Actuarial
calculations etc!! That should give you sleepless nights
Where are you based? If you are in UK take a look at the Software
Users Yearbook in your local reference library - it lists all software
available in UK.
I'd have expected the Trade Association (whatever it is) to be able to
offer some guidance on this.
You could also talk to your own Insurance Broker and see if they know
of anything! Might earn some fee or at least Brownie Points for not a
lot of effort!
If you do decide to have a go - remember that the insurance industry
can well afford a fat fee! They take enough off us!
I'd be interested to know the outcome of this one!
Good Luck - I think you'll need it!

Hi all,
My mother just started work at a new place and they are looking for a
computer program. They sell insurance but can only get programs that
you can use for short term, life or medical insurance but nothing for
all 3 together. They want to know if I can write them something. LOL.
I want to know if I can too!! My questions are: what language would
be best to write something like this? Java? VB? How much can I
reasonably expect to charge (I know questions like this are not great
ones but I would like to get a ballpark)? Should I do it?
TIA,
Riva
