The first statement just executes the verify script and discards any
returned value, the second actually checks the value it returns. The
verify() function may be returning a true or false value but this has
no effect on form submission unless you explicitly check its return
value.
I really should have picked that up before, but it's well over a year
since I coded anything serious & obviously I am getting stale!
