One thing to remember is that most web hosts (at least the hosts I've dealt with) don't allow remote connections to the databases. You can only connect from localhost. So check with your host before spending time or money.

What I did for a client once was set up a script on their server to dump the data to a file and transfer the data to one of my servers. I have enough control over my server that I can allow remote connections and was able to load the data directly to my database. The data was available in case the client's server went down. This was only needed for a couple of months.

For another client I setup a regular data dump on the web server. They setup some sort of automated ftp to transfer the data to their local Windows network once a day.
