Can't remember the exact terminology as I'm up to my neck in XML and really crappy parsers but I think after a domain lapses there is a certain period ("detagged" I think) where the domain is shut off from the net but is still tied to its existing owner allowing them to renew (just in case they forgot or something). I think this state lasts for a few months.

If the domain is not re-registered by the end of this limbo state then it comes open for purchase. Only at that stage will your client be able to grab it.
