She didn't say, but that might work. Maybe work the light/dark text with it. Reverse the color of the outline so it's opposite?
Check out this site: http://inacomp.net/ I worked for them when they brought in a designer to redo their logo back in 2000. I see it's changed since then. Now they have a circle that looks somewhat like water splashing out - or energy - not sure which it's suppose to look like. Lower on the page there is another company logo for Detroit Regional Chamber. That circle symbol they use may work for your design with some variation of course and tweaking. Maybe have the key come out through the center and lay across the bottom band of the circle.
