when you visit a forum you usually see a list of threads in descending sequence by date of last posting

if a thread gets no additional posts, it will soon sink from sight (as it were)

a "sticky" thread remains stuck at the top of the list

this technique is often used for "Please Read The Guidelines Before Posting" threads and similar stuff

only moderators can "stick" a thread
