Quoting Joseph Harris <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:

Hi Peter,

You back in civilization ;-)? How did the trip go?

Joeph

Not at all - just keeping an eye on you all via webmail! LOL. Not due back until end Jan - but by then there may be nothing left here! We've been here before during "Fire Season" but never anything like this.

An area roughly the size of Ireland has been destroyed in Victoria so far in the past ten days and the fires are expected to burn for up to six months they are so huge! Over 4000 firefighters involved in fighting them with some coming from New Zealand and USA to help. In Tasmania 23 homes were destroyed the night before last and in Perth suburbs two homes lost yesterday. About ten miles north of here (we're staying with our son in South of Canberra City) on Sunday afternoon a fire started that destroyed 100 hectares in two hours!

We think we've got water problems in parts or all of UK - here in Australia they are experiencing their sixth year of drought conditions, hence the serious fires. There's a weather channel on TV here (weather details all day 24/7) that shows the rainfall figures. Examples - Darwin usually has average 248 mm in December, mostly in the early part of the month - it's the 14th as I write this and they've had less than 15 mmm this month so far and none forecast for at least another week! Alice Springs less than half, Canberra less than 10% and so it goes on all round the country - anywhere that has had above 20% thinks itself very lucky. Dams (reservoirs) are typically only 25 - 35% full. All watering of gardens is restricted to two hours morning and evening on alternate days in Canberra - no washing of cars, filling swimming pools etc. Temperatures since we arrived on 26th November have hovered in the high twenties to low thirties starting around 27 the day we arrived - but with a steady daily climb - forecast is for 35/36 today! Forecasters are saying Christmas here will probably be 40 degrees or more - our son tells us that a couple of years back it was 44 in Canberra on Christmas Day!

Take care everyone and have a good and safe Christmas (or other holiday season) wherever you are. If anyone wants to send me a Christmas pressie, then a fully loaded water tanker - about 300,000 tonnes would be very welcome - I could become a very rich man by auctioning it off!! LOL

Regards,

Peter MacGregor
