Tris - I actually have had luck with some onboard RAIDs, but if I have the option, 9 times out of 10 I will purchase an add-on card. And after doing some research and hearing what others say about 3ware, I took the leap and never looked back. I have an 8-port IDE in one server running RAID 5 (which I'm in the process of upgrading all of the drives to 1TB), and a 2-port in another server running RAID 1 (which I will be increasing the drive space soon too). I have purchased cheaper cards in the past, but would rather spend the extra money to get 3ware (until something changes my mind). They are super easy to set up, very reliable, and their support is fantastic.
