INTERNET "CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION" SLATED
Network Solutions, which up until now has had exclusive rights to
register
Internet domain names under a contract with the National Science
Foundation,
is organizing, along with other industry players, a "Global
Incorporation
Alliance Workshop" next month. The Clinton administration's recently
announced plan for the Internet calls for private industry to work out a
new
Internet management strategy by themselves, without government
involvement.
Decisions ultimately will be made by an as-yet-to-be-named 15-member
board,
but the workshop will lay the groundwork for addressing many of the
issues
involved in designing a new system. The government has said it wants
the
new board up and running by Oct. 1, with a total transfer of
responsibility
no later than Oct. 1, 2000. (AP 11 Jun 98)
