Well, this new contract of mine is certainly the bee's digital knees, as it were:
designing an intranet from the ground up for a government department here in
Canada. Mucho interactivity, user customization options, etc... it surely does
sound like an exciting and enjoyable project, based on meetings I had this week
with the client.
What is most appealing about it (apart from the opportunity it gives me to tinker
with a number of new techniques and devices) is the fact that, this being an
intranet, I know *exactly* what every single user will be viewing my pages with.
Whoa, what a concept! None of this worrying and fiddling to accommodate 8
different browsers on 5 different OS's on 7 different connection speeds on 20 kinds
of monitors (and supporting 97 different flavours of HTML/Java/Jscript/ActiveX
etc)... just one homogenous group of users on a single LAN, running NS 4.x under
NT. Monitors set at 800x600 or above. Java and cookies enabled. Et cetera.
The client wants the finished site to "look and feel kind of like a Windows
application" (well hey, I'm not going to argue)... this raises some interesting design
possibilities. I'll be going bonkers with Java and Javascript, that's for sure.
Anyway, no doubt I'll be needing to pick various of your estimable brains as this
project develops... will keep you posted.
