The site is also supposed to be a shining example of how scalable MS network
architectures are:
"The Microsoft TerraServer project is just one of many efforts within
Microsoft to scale its software to support terabyte applications.
TerraServer was designed to test and demonstrate what Microsoft WindowsNT
Server, and the next release of Microsoft SQL Server, are capable of today."
I went to the site today and got an error message three page-reloads in a
row, stating that there were too many users. I got through on the 4th
reload, went through a few pages, then got "database temporarily
unavailable" error messages about 5 times in a row and gave up.
I really loved this link on their FAQ "How can I serve multimegabyte files
to thousands of users a day without performance problems?"
which generated this error:
"HTTP Error 403
403.9 Access Forbidden: Too many users are connected
This error can be caused if the Web server is busy and cannot process your
request due to heavy traffic. Please try to connect again later.
Please contact the Web server's administrator if the problem persists."
I give MS credit for trying, and this looks like it will be interesting if
they get it to work, but it doesn't seem ready for prime time.
