Ah yes, Design before Implementation. A stunning concept for some
who are not engineers by trade or inclination... Very well put, Peter!
And worth stating over and over again to those starting out!
First, understand what you are trying to do. See it in your mind's
eye. You can always figure out how to do it later, after you have some
concept of the structure you want to create. As to HTML, it is fairly
simple, and of far less importance than the structure of the idea you wish
to communicate.
Not to say you can ignore the limitations of the HTML... but... what
you can not imagine, you can not experiment with in your mind, and you
simply can not create in the real world! Master the concept first, then
imagine your users trying to use your site. Only then are you ready to
make your first throw-away demo. And do run that demo by some innocent
users to see if they think the way you thought they would
Finally, after it is built, measure how your users use the site, and
what they are really looking for. You are gathering all that information
every day in your server logs. It is something magazine publishers would
kill for! Write your own little PERL scripts to pull out that data for
you. Or hire someone to do that. (Hint, hint...) But DO it! That data
is GOLDEN!
