Well, I upgraded this morning to Win98. Unix-heads can check the papers: the
sky didn't fall here, there were only minor earthquakes, and cows still give
milk.

It's quite painless. Just insert the disk, type your name, click yes several
times, and chat on the phone for half an hour to your friends as it
upgrades.

The biggest surprise is how little difference it makes. I had Windows 95
(but the latest release, for a new machine from January 98) with Windows
Plus add-on and IE 4.x (latest version), so most of Win98 features were
already there. I'd call it Win97.2.

It does seem to open applications faster. One gets little message flags to
tell you that you're pointing at a close box. It does seem to run everything
a bit faster. It promises more system stability, so if that's true, then
it's okay. My USB scanner works; all of the other hardware continues to
work.

Otherwise, no big changes.

I also added the "Win98 Plus!" This is add-ons and enhancements for Win98.
Definitely a waste of $40. It did nothing more than what I already had with
the previous Windows Plus (themes for the desktop, etc. plus a few games
that I'll delete.)

So... don't rush out to upgrade. I was the only person in the store and I
asked the guy if it was selling. He said no. Upgrade if you must for a
project, etc., but otherwise...
