The CEO of a recruiting agency also mentioned this to me. I asked him if the
trend of rates was going up or down. He replied "It's odd, but rates have
remained flat for the last two or three years. The demand is greater, but
rates seem to top out at $55-$60 per hour for contractors (working through
agencies)."
Since the agencies generally mark up about 30-40%, it means that contractors
are billed out at around $100/hr, and managers seem to have a problem
crossing that psychological number.
(Contractors who are not working through an agency should note that managers
are perfectly prepared to pay $90-$100/hr to an agency.)
Recruiters don't set the rate. If contractors (who are working through
recruiters) demand more, the recruiters will go back to the managers and
insist on more. In most cases, I find that managers are interviewing only
two or three people for a position: they simply can't find more than that.
So... if they want you, it's your call to ask for more.
