Below is what I sent 'em (though I really should be sleeping -- and on
re-reading my letter, it shows :) ).

Julian, still in shock.

Sir/Madam,

I am shocked that the San Jose Mercury News should tacitly condone the
theft of intellectual property by publishing Kevin Maney's -ABCs for
Building Your First Site- (June 28). And as a victim of Web site theft,
I am outraged.

The article recommended that beginning Webmasters should "look for pages
you like on the Web, save them into your page-making program, then cut
out the content on the pages and put yours in. Don't forget to change
the addresses behind the links."

Not only is this practice potentially illegal, it is morally wrong and
dangerous advice.

If this is not obvious to you, then consider your own reaction if a
competing news Web site appeared one day, bearing an uncanny resemblance
to Mercury Center.

I suspect that your editorial board would be up in arms, and proceed
directly to confront the offending site's owner with lawyers in tow.
With good reason: your competitor stole your intellectual property and,
furthermore, diluted Mercury Center's brand.

Meanwhile, said site owner wonders why the stolen site isn't generating
quite the positive response expected, given that it should look great.
In fact, a flood of flame mail appears in his in-box. The site is
difficult to navigate. It looks suspiciously familiar.

Oh well. At least he made the news -- as a criminal.

And so I say: Shame on you, San Jose Mercury News, for encouraging your
'Net newbie readers to sabotage their online reputation. Double shame on
you for exposing them to the tender mercies of the legal profession. And
treble shame on you for publishing an article advocating the theft of
intellectual property.

As reformed punk rocker, I am, however, impressed with your daring new
editorial policy regarding anarchism.
