Caldera makes very stable stuff, but it is (or was) not the latest
release. I mean, I could go months without rebooting! Whereas Red Hat
which is not so bad, seems to have slipped up a bit on the last two
releases, having had a 5.0(a) and a 5.0(b) release with the ONLY visible
difference being a Netscape sticker on the box and a wide silver boarder
around the CD-ROMS. I got 5.1, which I had trouble with... and now hear
they released a 5.1(b) without telling anyone, save that people started
complaining and comparing directory structures and bugs... and have now
said there is clearly a 5.1, and an improved 5.1(b) variant. I hate it
when they screw up, but to cover it up without incrementing the version
number, that's just not fair. Not enough Q/A!
OPEN is some sort of consortium which established industry wide
"standards" for Unix systems. Vendors fudged them a bit... Open Linux
would tend to conform to those standards.
Good Linux's are Red Hat (maybe), S.u.S.E, Debian, and if you don't
mind not being up to date, Caldera. But as I said, Caldera is probably
the most stable of the lot, but may be lacking in some device support
compared to the others.
I like Red Hat's install system better than SuSE, as in the past at
least, SuSE's YaST installer would not retain any of YOUR modifications to
the extensive "conflaguration" files.
If you have a laptop... support for the variations one finds in
laptops may compound the issue. I am having trouble getting my Hitachi
4140 set up right. SuSE will not boot the loader, LILO, though it will
run from the CD; Red Hat 5.0 boots, but does not support my 3com LAN card.
(It's a 3C562C LAN/Modem card... but... I'd be satisfied just getting ONE
of those to work! with Linux.)
Anyone else have interesting comparisons on these Linux variants?
