Could also be 7 times rather than 49 times. This would alter the
results somewhat, possibly moving it back to Venus rather than Mercury.

Again vague. To burn it must be vapor. The statement does not, of
necessity, require the lake itself to be molten sulphur. It could well be
a lake of molten iron or lava. Given the state of knowledge in those
days, I would bet on the lava, probably around Vesuvius. So the question
then becomes how hot typical lava is. Given that it is a mixture that
varies from region to region, and like glass, has no fixed melting
point...
