I've been told that the best way to handle bookmarked pages that no longer
exist is not to redirect or refresh, but to use the old file names and
create a custom "jump" page to whatever page is most similar on the new
site. The reason being that once a page is in the Search Engine, you really
don't want to replace it -- it's just too difficult (in some cases) to get
pages into the SEs these days. But if it's a large site, that could mean
creating a huge amount of these jump pages, and then having to maintain
them. Ugh.

Anyone know what an SE spider does if it hits a symbolic link? I haven't
read anything about symbolic links in my several SE newsletters, so I'm not
sure if the fix suggested is something that will cause problems with the
SEs or not. I know I've been using a symbolic link for a while...had a page
called bsp1.htm that I moved into its own directory (/bsp/index.htm) that
was bookmarked all over the universe. But I don't care of that page makes
it into the SEs or not since it has a great listing at Yahoo and is also
linked in from the International organizations web site, so it already gets
more hits than my work pages!
