Thanks to John, William and Mike for their quick responses to my question.
I found that ctrl-alt-backspace got me out of X-windows, by the simple
expedient of working my way through every likely key combination starting
with 2 keys and then 3 keys. Have you any idea how many 3 key combinations
there are on a 105 key keyboard? I lucked out after about half and
hour...then checked my email and got two or three other solutions. Thanks
again.

Now, I've just got to figure out why the mouse isn't working. No, I've got
to figure out where I'm going to start looking for why the mouse isn't
working. Damn, this is fun!
