PURCHASING A WEBSITE BANNER AD
by Trudy Paterson

There are three basic methods of purchasing banner advertisements on the
Internet. Advertising sites may add various bells and whistles to these
methods through specials and discounts. It is up to you, the consumer to
find the best possible banner ad program that meets your company's needs
and advertising budget.

Method 1...Purchasing your banner advertisement monthly. This is in my
view, the worst of the three. The reason being there is no guarantee that
your advertisement will be seen by anyone. It is paid for and that's that.
Of course, if you were to purchase a banner advertisement on a traffic
heavy website such as Yahoo (dig deep), you could assume your money was
well spent. Banner advertisements sold by this method are few and far
between.

Method 2.....Purchasing your banner advertisement via page views/
impressions. This is a good form of purchasing a banner ad, but not the
best. This type of advertisement can be purchased from many different sites
large or small. When I talk of the size of a website, I mean the amount of
traffic they get per day/month. What is a page view? Go to any page on
the Internet that has a banner ad at the top of a web page. When you
accessed that page you exposed the banner. This would be one page view.
If you were to go elsewhere and then come back to that page again, another
page view would be incremented for a total of two page views. Someone else
goes to that same page where the ad is and we now have three page views.
You get the idea. Banner advertisements sold in this manner usually are
priced per page view, ranging from one cent per page view to 5 cents per
page view, or more. In addition, there is usually a minimum amount of page
views that must be purchased. For example: 10,000 page views. The benefit
of advertising via page views is that you are guaranteed your banner ad
will be accessed a certain amount of times, before your banner
advertisement expires. Whether it takes a week, month or longer. The down
side is, just because someone came to a page where your advertisement is,
doesn't mean they looked at it. That's where a catchy banner ad comes in
handy.

Method 3......Purchasing your banner advertisement via click-thru's. In my
view, this is the best way to purchase a banner ad. A click-thru is just
what the name implies. The potential customer clicks on your banner
advertisement and comes directly to your site. This is the best way to
spend your advertising dollar because you are guaranteed visitors to your
site. So if you purchase 1000 click-thru's , you'll get 1000 visitors.
Usually banner advertisements using the click-thru method are purchased
from heavy traffic sites and are therefore more expensive.

In conclusion, if you are going to purchase a banner advertisement and you
have the big bucks, go for method three. If you are on a tight budget use
method two and stay away from method one altogether.
