IBM will support the Apache Web server, distributed free by the Apache
Group, in much the same way that it supports Notes and other IBM-owned
software. Apache is Unix-based and the market-leading Web server, ahead
of alternatives from Microsoft and Netscape. Netscape is said to be
considering support for Apache and Linux, along with Sun and others.

Oracle (Redwood Shores, CA) will begin developing a Linux version of its
Oracle8 database software and related inventory management software.
Informix Corp. (Menlo Park, CA) is already selling a Linux-compatible
version of Informix-SE, a database for small and medium-size businesses.
Linux -- an open-source Unix variant -- is gaining favor with companies
that don't like being locked into Windows NT.
