Ok.. I give up :(
I've managed to "save" an old Sun Sparc IPC workstation from the bin.
It has 32mb memory, a 40mhz CPU and 400-500mb disk, CDROM, Tape drive and a
big 16" monitor, sound card. It's running Solaris 2.3 and due to the
security holes it had to be taken of the network to the "outside". I was
told that it's too old to be bothered paying money to upgrade the OS as
that would also require some hardware upgrades.
Anyway it looked like a great addition to my intranet, an already setup
system to practice my now not oft used unix skills (we have moved to NT
mainly). I did do a quick look around to find that there are several
versions of linux that could be put on it and that RedHat has now released
it's 5.1 for Sparc. (yes Javilk, full of bugs). Anyone done a Linux install
on such a system?
Did I mention the unused laser printer that came with it?! :) Cables..
manuals... the lot. I may try and get that to work from my Mac or PC.
For the moment however, I'll just leave it as is but to add it into the
intranet I need to give it a new set of "net" info such as gateway ip,
name, ip address, netmask. I looked around and found a few files with that
type of info in them but was reluctant to just jump in and edit them.
How do I change that type of info?
Another question if I may. :)
There were a number of items on the way to the bin... one was a b/w Apple
scanner. It works and is in excellent condition... I've got a Mac, SCSI
cables... the right driver from Apple... but no bloody scanner software. :(
We couldn't find the original software anywhere. I did find a Hypercard
stack at Apple that drove it but it only does it in bitmap... not
grayscale, as it's for making Hypercard background images. I did look to
see if there was an Adobe Photoshop plugin... no :(. I did find a
commercial one somewhere. Any clues? Buying software is not really on as if
I get into that I may as well buy a new scanner.. a colour one with it's
own software.
thanks
Bruce
