I came across a neat trick last week. I was trying to reduce a text-heavy
splash screen from Tender Loving Care to make it into a small spot
illustration. Naturally, the text turned into an illegible blur. I replaced
all the type on the splash screen with type reset in Mini 7, a font
designed by Joe Gillespie, and it is absolutely clear and readable. Joe
provides free downloads of the Mac version of the font at
http://www.wpdfd.com/wpdtypo.htm#mini7 and suggests that if aren't on a
Mac, you can cut and paste individual letters to achieve the same look. I
found that it only looks good at 7 points, and would be perfect for small
buttons and captions.
You can see my illustration using Mini 7 at
http://www.tenderlovingcare.cc/interview.htm This URL will bypass the
frames and nav bars and get you there faster. The reproduction of the
splash screen is near the bottom of the page.
