If it weren't so sad, it would be funny --

This is exactly what is happening - and it's the result of short-term
thinking (ie, roll heads to reduce cash outlay) rather than systematic
analysis of root problems. The last round of cuts (95ish) is what led to
having no experienced "floor" employees to speak of when the company
decided to make more planes in a month than it ever had in its entire
history.

I've been constantly amazed -- business books/concepts that *I* read in
the 80s ... seem like "news" to some senior folks here, at the end of
the 90s.

Don't get me wrong -- there are too many folks working at Boeing -- but
I don't believe that the tactics being used to reduce head count in
[panic mode] are in the best long-term interests of the company. Many,
many folks are comparing this with the early 70s [will the last person
to leave Seattle please turn out the lights] although the region is not
as linked with Boeing for employment.
