Every install I've done of the ODBC components on an NT system was the
result of some other software installation. For example, installing Access
allowed me to install the ODBC driver for "select the drivers you need: SQL
Server, Access, Oracle, etc.).
I think the Cold Fusion demo also comes with an ODBC driver set that you can
install.
Sometime the term ODBC confuses people. There are ODBC drivers. They act as
middleware that lets interfacce A talk to database B. Interface A sends a
message to the ODBC driver. The ODBC driver translates the message into SQL
statements that database B can understand.
Thus, there is no ODBC compatibility, per se. There are drivers that are
designed to access a database. The database itself is not ODBC compatible,
as you often see written. When you see that, it should really say "contains
ODBC drivers to allow you to access this database".
You may want to look at the site for whatever database you want ODBC drivers
for and see if they are available there. For instance, to Access an MSQ Jet
database (Access/Visual Basic) you might want to check the Access or VB
site.

I know that you can just have the Access .mdb file and use an ODBC driver to
pull data in and out of your database. Hosting services that offer Cold
Fusion only require you to put the .mdb file on their system. They then
setup the .mdb file as a "CF datasource" using a CF setup app. The
datasource is identified as a certain type, ie. MS Access 97, which causes
CF to use the right ODBC driver to access the database. The ODBC driver must
be installed on your system first, though.
Outside of CF, datasources on NT are setup using the ODBC program launchable
off the Control Panel. If you don't have that installed, then you probably
don't have the ODBC components installed properly. If you do have it
installed, click the User DSN tab and see if there is a datasource of the
type you need listed there (.mdb). If not, click "Add". If there is one,
click the System DSN tab. Use the buttons on that tab to add the datasource
(file name) that you want to identify to the system as a datasource. Click
other tabs for more details.
Hope that helps.
