In my research for a new IPP that provides ColdFusion application server
.... i ran across a site with a link to a tracer.
So I ran traces via Carnegie Mellon to a variety of the providers - this
was on a saturday evening, pacific time.
the start was RTRBONE.NET.CMU.EDU

bmi.net -- 17 hops, 156 ms, 174 ms, 170 ms (sigh, they were local)
dynamicweb.net -- 15 hops, 43 ms, 43 ms, 42 ms
evocative.com -- 22 hops (!), 138 ms, 137 ms, 140 ms
iserver.com -- 14 hops, 53 ms, 52 ms, 50 ms
localweb.com -- 17 hops, 47 ms, 46 ms, 50 ms
media3.net - 12 hops, 29 ms 29 ms 29 ms
(and they are not the most expensive)
minerva.net - 21 hops (!), 50 ms, 73 ms, 53 ms
pair.com -- 15 hops, 34 ms, 35 ms, 36 ms
paconline.net -- 16 hops, 88 ms, 88 ms, 91 ms
sitehosting.net -- 14 hops, 90 ms, 95 ms, 95 ms
sohoweb.net -- 14 hops, 52 ms, 51 ms, 52 ms
virtualscape.com -- 13 hops, 49 ms, 37 ms, 35 ms
which is more important -- hops or times? why are there three times? are
these data worth anything?
the folks that say they have more than one connection to the backbone --
does this mean that there should be fewer hops, no matter where someone is
coming from?
FWIW, I find sohoweb.net intriguing -- UNIX and NT, discounts if you use
their "powered by" logo on your pages, T-3 and OC-12 (?) connections.
