If you are looking from the cost angle:

1) RedHat: Free to DL or some software stores have it for 45$ or you can get
it
            from a company like lsl.com for ~5$
           Installs on any intel, AMD, or Cyrix based system
           Most of the software you will want is free
           Takes less than an afternoon to setup

2) Solaris: (Last I saw) Adbout 600$ for a 1 year "subscription" program
(Get all 
             updates for a year) 
            Doesn't install on intel systems have to purchase a SPARC system
or
             something similar
            Can get Solarisx86 it does install on intel based system ~200$
or so
            Some of the software you will want is free
            Will take you better than half a day to set up

I have worked with just about everything, for UNI* I prefer SunOS it is
faster
than Solaris (or as some people call: slowaris).  For Linux I like Debian
over 
RedHat, RedHat though is more user friendly.
