As announced I'm starting a phylosophycal topic... Since it can't be scientific but it pretend to be and since it also pretend to be ethic it must be phylosopy :-) Maybe my mood is due to the post holiday crisis... when you return from holiday you are optimistic and pessimistic at the same time (as usual <g>). The holidays make you think the world could be better (at least your world) but when you return you find again the same things... Since I suspect you won't read anymore if I don't introduce the real topic... Technology as CSS, JavaScript, DHTML aren't anymore in their childhood (well on the Net time scale). I tend to classify these things under two category: control over aspect and dinamic contents. I think that more control over aspect and a "better HTML" much more suited to control aspect without forgetting contents is a good thing; not just because if a things look better... well it looks better but mainly because a better control over shape could mean a more efficient way to convey information (eg. BW monitor vs color monitor). Furthermore if a thing becomes more "aspect oriented" it should be more easy to control its aspect then playing with smart tricks to obtain a certain effect... I see the "dinamic contents part" as just a means to transfer part of the "input processing/interface" on the client side rather than on the server side (eg: form validation, menues, lists etc...). Now what kind of sites we are doing? What are the sites that make us earn money? There is a lot of material out there on the internet, people who want to show their cat (I'm one of those), who want to publicize their ideas, satisfy their ego describing their hobbies etc... Then there are people who realize informative/useful sites to collect advertising. Then there are no profit informative sites (university, governament etc...) And then there are commercial sites. Anything else? What does really make internet different from TV? Are we realizing brochures (as TV spots) or interactive sites? You can realize a brochure for a small site, but this will bring you enough money to pay for your work? Do you think that it's "moral" to follow the way of flashing idiots sites? Do we ever will succede in selling toothpaste? Who is using internet to sell something? How are you using the internet now? This are my answers. I don't love stupid unuseful things so I don't like TV spots (except the wonderbra spot). I think small flashing sites won't pay for your work. The internet is yet full of stupid things, this make really difficult to use proficiently a really god means, furthermore I think that insisting on conveince people to buy a car on the color of the coachwork or on the topmodel that you see in the spot is highly immoral. Well maybe there will be a time when we will sell toothpaste on the internet but how (spot style?) and when? I think the costumers on the internet are of another kind. Am I right? Who is using the internet now? What is looking for? Well I'm using the internet to get informations, to communicate and if I'll find something that interest me, to buy (but I'll continue to buy in the stores toothpaste, at least I'll look for information on the different brand of toothpastes) I think that items that cost to few and are of too general use won't be selled directly on the internet (distribution costs). I haven't seen a site that I find useful and that use "new client side technology" and have a very sophisticated design. I think that a sophisticated design is unconceivable with lot of informations (at least at reasonable cost) "Last" problem accessibility... Since there won't be good reason I think that people as Javilk won't use a "modern" browser and I'll continue to surf with JavaScript off. And we cant forget there are people that cant decide (they don't know or they really can't) how to browse a site. Do you think these "new technologies" have a future? So will/should we support/develope for these "new technologies"? Do you think browsers developers are following the right direction? Most of the people can't really appreciate these kind of choices but we can. Without forgetting our pockets (we can't sell what the market don't want but we can put on the market different things that the market could accept), could our choices contribute to a better developement of the internet? AMEN, and sorry for being as usual so pedantic. -------------------------------------------------- Ivan Sergio Borgonovo [EMAIL PROTECTED] Webmaster Gorilla Bookstore http://www.gorilla.it Tel. +39 2 3311105/34530455 Fax. +39 2 34531591 Via Mac Mahon 9, Milano, Italy -------------------------------------------------- ____________________________________________________________________ -------------------------------------------------------------------- Join The Web Consultants Association : Register on our web site Now Web Consultants Web Site : http://just4u.com/webconsultants If you lose the instructions All subscription/unsubscribing can be done directly from our website for all our lists. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
