Tribe,
A friend of mine asked if there is an (set) of applications which could
be made to help him manage and search documents. I know that I could
probably make / buy software that could do this ... it's a common
request for company intranets. But he's looking for something that's
more consumer friendly in scale and price point. Does anyone know of
such a beast?
His notes on what he wants it to do exactly are below.

A knowledge base into which I can enter
- my notes/thoughts, on:
- articles I've read (with full bibliographic information)
- news items (with full bibliographical information)
- articles, text, hypertext in digital form (.html, .pdf, .ps, .txt,
.doc,
etc)
- etc
Each record could include a field for notes *and* article *and*
references,
so that if my notes are on an article which I have in electronic form,
those will automatically show up together.
The whole base should be searchable by word, phrase, etc (eg altavista
search language).
Articles, etc. should be cataloguable by keywords such that I can look
up
relevant stuff by keyword. Keywords could be entered by the user
picking
from a menu of existing keywords or adding a new one.
It should be sharable across my local PC and PalmPilot, and hopefully,
WWW-publishable. (the latter would allow collaboration, though that's
not
important & is too complicated right now, ie who approves publishable
information).
Should a hierarchical document structure system be supported? If so,
multiple hierarchies should co-exist; the keyword indexing system should
function to place documents into these hierarchies.
