IMNSHO, whether or not such stories are true is a moot point, and not worth much energy fretting about. We should always assume that it could be happening (since the technology certainly exists), and we must take responsibility for our own privacy (no one looks out for number one like you do). As far as email goes, get a good encryption tool if you're concerned about your privacy. PGP is still free, is easy to use (at least on my Mac), and works like a champ.
