there's a book called (i think) _A Mathemetician Reads the Newspaper_ which
drives a rather large, rather blunt spike through the numbers you normally
see in the media.   if i have the title right, one of its claims is:

    The only thing the Hite Report* proved is that 96% of the women
    surveyed didn't want to talk to Sher Hite about their sex lives.


* a notoriously bad piece of statistics from the '80s, where the researcher
tried to do a random sample, but didn't get enough responses.   instead of
stopping, or trying again, she made the mistake of filling out the sample
with candidates who were not at all randomly selected.
