I've done about a dozen Redhat installs on the same machine in the last
three months. The first
three or four were intended to be mistakes while I learned. Next couple
came when I was (IMHO) smart enough to attempt a kernel upgrade *before*
I started putting real files on the system -- so I learned what I can
screw up during the upgrade process while I could still wipe the system
and fix it :) Last two have been experiments to see what happens if you
try one arrangement vs. another.

Highly recommend that process. :)

But, in the end, I got myself a copy of "Running Linux" this week, just
before I finally settle on an install and finish the silly machine this
weekend. Can't recommend highly enough the first three chapters of that
book when you approach this the first time. Does excellent explanation
of partitioning concerns, has great troubleshooting section, and even
holds your hand when you need it.

*could* have done the final install without it, but with it I suddenly
understand a lot more about why various things happened along the way,
got answers to the few experiments I ran I couldn't figure out the
results of, and am feeling a lot more confident about getting it right
this weekend :)

If nothing else, borrow a copy and keep it on hand . . . .

BTW, I just let RedHat nuke the entire NT3.51/Win3.1 systems that were on
the two hard drives on that box the first time, and it did a very
efficient job of making them go away :)
