Look at it from the bottom, not the top. If I can get similar
products from Brand A, and Brand B, then it is ok, even if I can only get
them from single factory authorized dealers. If I can only get product B
in my area, and only product A in my Aunt's home town; THEN it is a
conspiracy to deprive me of the price and quality benefits competition
brings.
MS wanted to make sure that Netscape was NOT available on dos/windows
machines, wanted to deprive me of the benefits of competition. They also
bought up Foxpro, then nearly killed it after DBase went away. They
established contracts preventing or strongly discouraging companes from
selling computers with operating systems and software other than theirs.
It is clear to most people above the average IQ of a turnip that MS is
trying to prevent competition. (Though some people don't pay
attention to these matters as long as their applications programs
run.)
On the basis of these and other things I have read, I firmly believe
MS should be dismembered.
In practice, however, the growing support of Linux may render MS
obsolete. Linux is a robust multi-tasking easy to program operating
system. Windows is an anti-programmable front end to a lousy operating
system. If you want to use gooey applications, Windows works ok. If you
want to build things, Linux is the way to go.
