The Sum of the Years Digits or the Rule of 78's adds the years
(SOYD) and/or months (Rule of 78) to determine the denominator.
It then takes 1/x, 2/x, 3/x etc. of the payment and applies it
against principal, which is why interest payments in the
beginning are so high.

Assume SOYD for a loan for 5 years. The sum would be 1+2+3+4+5
or 15. 1/15 is applied to principal, then 2/15, etc. Approx
midway the interest payment becomes higher.
