House committee to go live with audio on Internet
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. House Agriculture committee
will become the first congressional panel to broadcast its
proceedings in live audio format over the Internet, a committee
spokesman said Monday.
The Agriculture Committee will make its debut at a
Wednesday hearing on emergency food assistance programs. The
hearing begins at 10 a.m. EDT and can be accessed at
http://www.house.gov/agriculture/audio.htm.
``For the first time ever, people will be able to hear the
committee's proceedings as they are happening,'' said Rep. Bob
Smith, an Oregon Republican who heads the panel. ``This is a
great step forward to making the government more accessible for
all Americans.''
The agriculture panel handles everything from emergency farm
aid to spending on the U.S. school lunch program and oversight
of the Commodities Futures Trading Commission.
The committee hearings are closely monitored by lobbyists
for food, farm and consumer groups and can last several hours
depending on how many times they are interrupted for voting by
the full House.
