Wednesday Morning, EXCITE based peepholes / query voyeur pages went
off-line, as those of you receiving daily reports already know. This was
followed by all EXCITE based search engines dropping off the net Thursday
about 12:30 AM to nearly 4AM. As some of you may know, other web users
and ISP's reported network problems in the Wednesday evening through
Thursday morning time frame.
Some of you helped us check on these global network availability
problems earlier this morning. I Thank you for your help.
We poll some of EXCITE's search engines, as well as a number of other
engines, so even with their loss, we are not down. Nevertheless, the two
peepholes do represent a significant portion of our data, and are
particularly noted for the stability of certain "bands" of queries from
day to day. While we may get a spike of queries for this or that term, we
can expect that certain terms will remain within a fairly defined range of
ranks from day to day and week to week. We have come to rely on these as
sanity checks on both the engines, and the status of the world itself.
I have since spoken with EXCITE, and they admit having network
troubles during this time frame. Although EXCITE's search engines are
back on line as of 4am, and available in most parts of the country, they
say their peephole pages will take somewhat longer to come back on line;
as of now, they are returning empty pages.
EXCITE has stated they do back their peephole pages, and that data
will continue to be made available.
Meanwhile, this temporary loss of stable reference bands threw our
quality control checks, and shut down our nightly reports as some of the
smaller and more radical engines warped the mix. Among other things, Sex
and Emily Dickinson shot to the the top of the list, while mp3 plunged. It
was fairly clear that the samples were no longer representative of the
bulk of search engine queries, but of radical swings we see in the smaller
engines from day to day. Although these swings damp out over the period of
a week, they are more noticeable on a shorter time period. (All engines
show substantial swings and oscillations on an hour by hour basis, but
these tend to damp out over the course of a day on the larger engines.)
Just thought I would let you know. We are watching the engines and
reporting what is going on.
