IBM WINS MINITEL DEAL
In a deal with France Telecom, IBM will develop software and services to
bring Web access to France's 35 million Minitel subscribers. The move
is a major part of France's efforts to jump-start its population to
become more
active on the Internet. Currently, only about 3% of the French
population uses the Internet, compared with 20% in the U.S., and 9% in
the U.K. and Germany. In addition to upgrading the aging Minitel, both
France Telecom
and IBM will jointly market the new Java-based system to national
telecommunications providers in other countries.
