How to write your first CGI:
1. Write CGI - 1 hour
2. Read four books trying to figure out why it does not work - 1 week
3. Wait for a tech support guy who actually knows what he is talking
about, maybe... - 3 days
4. Find out PERL is in /usr/outer/slovobia/PeRL - 2 minutes
5. Get CGI to work - 2 minutes
How to Write your first CGI at work
1. Get desk - 1 day
2. Get chair - 1 day (Stolen from another cubicle)
3. Get moved to different desk 1 day
4. Get Network Computer - 2 days
5. Get account - 3 days (2nd Monday!)
6. Get IP# and technician to hook Network Computer onto LAN - 2 days
(Get PC to get on meeting scheduling system... pending...)
7. Find out where to put CGI's - 15 minutes (three times...)
8. Get write permissions - ...
9. Get fired for not having created CGI - 1 minute.
10. Finally get write permission authorization set - 1 day too late!
Not to mention numerous meetings, etc. planning what had to be done so
it would be ISO 9000 compliant, not overload the systems, etc. etc. etc.
etc. All scheduled via some meeting schedule system that I could not get
because I was on the Network Computer system, not the wonzoid PC network
system -- that I had not yet been given by the time I had to leave!
Yes, they both happened to me! Only it wasn't /usr/outer/slovobia/PeRL,
But I've had it all over the place in different shops, /bin/perl,
/usr/bin/perl, /usr/local/bin/perl, and a few other obscure places.
So now, I always walk in with my notebook machine running Linux with the
Apache web server. Productivity on Day One! (Well, if you get me a desk
and office chair to sit on...)
