>From Computist Communique, 14 October:
Linux/Unix will be particularly important for the Merced chip, according to
analyst Mark R. Anderson.
These moves also undercut Sun, which sells the Solaris Unix variant, and
perhaps SGI's graphics
workstation market as well. Incidentally, Sun just announced a SunPCi
co-processor board that allows its
workstations to run Windows and DOS in native mode, without using Unix
emulation. Sun also has a new
Project Cascade to allow Solaris to handle Windows NT network services. That
should help server
interoperability in NT-dependent shops. As others take over the Unix market,
Sun is finally moving into the
NT world -- but hopes to take the top end.

Windows NT 5.0 for corporate networks has run into problems with its second
public test version. "We
have to improve in almost all areas," according to a Microsoft VP for
developer relations and marketing.
The final version may be out next fall.
[SJM, 13Oct98, 1C.]
The MacOS X ("ten") Server (previously called Rhapsody) is based on BSD 4.4
Unix with a Mach kernel.
Version 1.0 is due this Oct/Nov. It has preemptive multithreading, object
support, tight Java integration,
etc., for applications that are written for the "Yellow Box" API also used
by Windows NT and Next
Step/Open Step developers. Apple says all Posix-compliant apps should run
with just a recompilation.
(Posix is the Unix file system.) Older MacOS applications will run on within
the "Blue Box," probably with
Mac OS 8.5 capabilities, when the consumer version is released next fall.
Apps will get preemptive
multitasking with protected memory if they have been "Carbonized" to run
with Apple's Carbon API.
