hey gang -

so far, i've been trying to avoid making specific mention of the company i
work for, mostly because the opinions i've expressed about it are rather
uniquely my own. someone once said, "never argue with a man who buys ink
by the barrel", and i'd extend that to my own situation as, "be careful
what you say about your boss when he's the former intellectual property
counsel for a media company." ;-)

today, though, i have some Official Business, so it's time to haul out the
details.

Lee Enterprises (http://www.leeenterprises.com/) (please don't blame me for
either the site, or the domain name.. neither were under my control) is a
half-billion dollar media company which owns about 25 daily newspapers, a
dozen or so TV stations, and something like 50 specialty publications.
the last documentation i saw for our data migration to the new network says
we have 129 domains in production, and know who they belong to. there are
another 40 or 50 domains still hanging in limbo, waiting to be claimed.

at any rate.. Lee does not have a level of web skill in its enterprises
sufficent to meet the demands of the market. i've bitched before about
the need for general training, but that's not the key issue. what is key
is that what Lee does not have in-house, it's willing to buy.

i've been asked to compile a list of "approved vendors" for third-party web
development, probably on a site-by-site basis. i don't have a list of
jobs right now, and there will be some delay before we start handing out
work. we have to get the new network into production before we open the
gates on development. still, this is an open call for people to submit
their contact information, skill set description, and URLs for samples of
work. there are no restrictions on what we're looking for.. i see us
needing everything from overall site design to HTML gruntwork to ongoing
maintenance.

DO NOT be afraid to toss your hat in the ring because you're not sure if
you'll meet our standards. if you know what HTML and FTP are, and can set
up your own modem & email client, you're qualified. my goal is to
partition the work so there's something for everyone.. general organization
and style development for people with expertise in those areas, formatting
of content to spec for those with less experience.

hopefully, i'll be posting calls for specific work in the future, but for
now, we're trying to build the index for our contractor pool. the contact
information and skill set description are key, URLs are frosting if you've
got them. please send the information to:
