The GIF 89A specification (Compuserve's 'animated GIF' spec) is like most
other computer "standards": not all vendors support the entire thing.
Kinda like the Big Two Browsers' approach to HTML, CSS, Java and so on.
A couple of earlier versions of Netscape were noteworthy for not reliably
supporting rudimentary features of the 89A spec, such as the ability to
loop animations; I'm not aware of any fix.
(The animation spec actually has a number of interesting optional features
that I've never seen implemented in either a GIF-authoring program OR
browser, such as the ability to encode plain ASCII text in the file and
have it rendered as part of the graphic... anyway.)
