TV sure does tell kids that, especially if your poor affection-deprived
young 'uns have the misfortune to latch on to the Diabolical Purple Lizard,
aka "Barney".
I'm not sure whether my kids are just exceptionally well-adjusted or not
<g>, but they instinctively disliked that obsequious sauropod right from
the get-go. I remember my youngest daughter at about four years old
telling me, "Barney is not real, Daddy... I mean, the way he *talks* isn't
real. He acts like kids are all just stupid. Like they're babies or
something." Ah, that's my girl: a mistrustful cynic at four. But I'd prefer
that to her being roped in by the equally cynical money-making machine
that Barney is.
Anyway... these Furbie critters have piqued my interest I must admit, and
my kids have been dropping not-so-subtle hints along the same lines, vis a
vis Christmas. I was in the local Wal-Mart this weekend and asked a sales
clerk about their availability... he kind of sighed, then said as if by rote:
"They-are-on-back-order-and-will-be-here-in-two-weeks." He paused,
then muttered furtively, "And if I were you sir, I'd bring a crash helmet and
a can of Mace with you... this is gonna be worse than those damn Tickle-
Me Elmo things."
