Yes, AOL does have it's own proxy server that works in it's own f'd up way.
When my customer's come to me using AOL I usually try to get them off of it
ASAP. If that's not an option, many times I've talked them through the cache
clearing routine in AOL, but, if recollection serves me right, we rarely, if
ever, succeeded in making any difference: it appeared that AOL would just
send out the proxy version anyway. I think we may have had better luck if
the user logged out and back in, but can't say fer sher on that, either.
My "foolproof" way around the hassle only really worked during pre-staging
development: I would just change the name of the "top-level" working dir on
the server, then give them the new address. For example, let's say I was
developing at:
http://www.whatever.com/temp/
I'd change it to:
http://www.whatever.com/temp2/
then give the new address to my client.
I think there are others on this list who know a bit more about the proxy
system at AOL, but that's my workaround.
BTW, in case you are not aware, AOL uses a compression format that is set as
a default when AOL is installed. It converts graphics files to the .art
format. This format will represent your graphics in unexpected ways,
sometimes dropping entire color-ranges or shifting colors. You many want to
make sure that your client has "compressed graphics" turned off on his/her
machine so that you both will be seeing close to the same thing.
