Which is why I drink TeJava, the ice tea in a bottle. Read the lable on the
back: "Contains 100% pure Java."
By the way, there's a minor bug in the iMac's implemention of Java. At work,
we're doing a Java applet that'll run on Win/Mac/UNIX (Solaris/AIX/HP-UX).
It worked fine on all but the iMac's Internet Explorer.
I spent some time on this and it turned out that the Apple Virtual Machine
(AVM) isn't implementing Java correctly. This can be fixed by using the IE
options to select Java and then switch from AVM to Microsoft Virtual Machine
(MVM.) Poor Apple hasn't been able to get SUN to release up-to-date VMs for
Apple.
Bob is right: originally, Java was a project to fix the problem with UNIX:
there's too many flavors of UNIX (30 or so, no?) and nothing is compatible
across all UNIX platforms. So if SUN could create a virtual machine that
could run on any UNIX box, then they could increase their UNIX market. It
took them a short while to realize that they could build virtual machines
for Intel and Apple machines as well, and that started off the SUN/Microsoft
Java war.
