My SE of choice lately has been:

http://google.stanford.edu/

The way it operates is deceptively simple. After you do a search be sure to
read "What do the numbers in the results mean". It will explain the little
bar graph to the left of each search result. I have been having very good
results with this SE lately and feel like I've taken a step backward when I
have to go use Lycos or Yahoo sometimes...plus, with Google, you don't have
all those "desperate for mindshare" clogged portal pages.
